Twin Peaks: The Return

Twin Peaks is here, but only the first four episodes have been streamed on-demand early.

Despite as always not understand what is going on, with elements left to the imagination, I was astonished by how well it had been put together. I was worried it had only been shot so an ordinary person wouldn’t get it whatsoever, but for Lynch this is shot quite clearly. And yet, it is like him, through and through.

In true Lynchian style, people switched off in the US between the second half of episode 2 and the beginning of episode 3, with episode 8 meeting a seemingly mixed reception and scaring off viewers who found it too surreal, but for the time being I think it’s a good piece of work that has maintained just the right level of Lynch-ness.

I thought it would continue in the same way this time, and yet scenes with long takes that make no sense or silent scenes that drag on are evident in his film making. What do you call those wonderful bits, “scenes where your waiting yet nothing happens”? In other words, this is exactly the sort of thing non-fans hate, and yet fans find irresistible.

Naturally it’s been made assuming that it can be watched over and over again. Which may be a bit rough on people used to recent overseas dramas and plot twists that happen every five minutes.

For those that want to try it now, since it could basically be a series for fans, I think it best to watch at least the first nine episodes from the last series, because it is bound to be a little difficult to understand for those who have not seen Twin Peaks before.
