The 5070’s rose gold case normally comes with a silver dial, but a rare black dial was put up for sale the other day at Christies’s New York.

The real thing had an aura about it, being in extraordinarily good condition. It was a model that felt unusually large as a Patek of this period, with the Ref.5070 case a size bigger than the 40mm diameter Ref.5970. Judging from the trend or modern watches, it’s standard size may be a sign of the model’s continued ongoing popularity.

Because Ref.5070R appeared at exactly the same time, it was the same amount of $175,000. Still, the bespoke dial would have come with a premium tag because it would have been half this amount if it had a normal dial.
