Kusumu

Curry masterMaster of curry is always sharing information on good places to eat curry, so on a Kansai trip I visited one in Kobe. The authentic home cooked Indian restaurant ‘Kusumu honba katei ryōri’.
It feels like it began preparing food alongside what seemed to be an Indian Food Store originally. Now the restaurant has expanded upstairs with the food store open in the basement.
Walking up the stairs you notice Indians sitting down towards the front of the shop making phone calls. Is there no-one inside? I gingerly take a peak and somehow it seems as if there is, with a Russian looking couple eating.
I sit down with the menu but samosa after samosa are brought out in silence. Along with Chili pepper sauce. “It’s sweet” I say, eating what appears like chili sauce placed on the table, and slightly spicy.
Before long, main dishes come out. Bean curry and broccoli with potato curry, and then a mixed vegetable curry. The bean curry has an extremely strong taste. When I ask why everything is vegetable, they simply reply “I’m vegetarian”. No wonder.
Chapati are tender as well and taste authentic. A voice cries out “Chai!” as I try to stand up after eating. The sweet tea soothes and tastes pleasant.
I guess this really is Indian vegetarian home cooking. Simply yet rich.
I was a little worried about how well the original achcharu was bottled in-store, but since I already had a lot to carry gave up buying some. Oh well, maybe I can come again.
