Looking at case shape for this watch, this model is clearly Ref.3970 but the design is from the Ref.5970 dial (resembling one that was special ordered and different from normal).

Even so, there’s something strange about it. I wonder if this is authentic?

This special order Ref.5970 dial is thought to come from the original design. This famous piece also went to auction.

I’ve laid them both out so that you can see that just dropping this design into a smaller diameter, from Ref.5970 into Ref.3970, it’s almost impossible to tell what is different just by looking at them. Furthermore, both in-dials left and right carry the same design as the Ref.5004 Arabic dial.

Well, if we assume it is genuine after all, and someone combined all their favourite bits and details, would it be a custom ordered dial for Ref.3970 … ?
