Parade – Hoboken, New Jersey 1955
Robert Frank’s famous work “Parade - Hoboken, New Jersey (1955)” will be making its first appearance in a year at PHILLIPS’ auction in April.
The title of this work includes the word “parade,” but the focus is on those watching the parade, not on the event itself. The face of the person watching from the window on the left is half covered by blinds, and the face of the person on the right is covered by a swaying national flag so you can only see their torso. The image formed by the two windows and the bottom of the national flag reflects the relationship between people and their national flags.
This work is extremely popular, with even a small print of 21 x 33 cm going for $138,600 at last year’s auction. I wonder how things will turn out this time.
Speaking of monotone pieces from the 1960s and later, this piece auctioned last October was also magnificent.
This is an original print of course. Prints by Edward Weston that were developed in later years by his son go for less than $10,000, but original prints from the 1930s-40s sell for quite a good amount.
This piece is also on the small side at 19 x 24 cm, and though it’s traditional, it has an edge to it. I suppose good art is timeless.
