Patek 5970P
The 5970 retains a stable value through the shortness of it’s production life. Though it’s real appeal I think still comes down to having good design.
In the case of the 5970 in platinum, the dial design is subtly changing. I’m not really sure whether you can tell or not, but when seen side-by-side they look particularly impressive.
If you look clearly you can see ‘numbers 3, 5, 17, and 19’, ‘character spacing between 23 to 29’, and ‘how pronounced 15 or 17 are beside the tachymeter’. Comparing not only their thickness, the entire length of numbers has become larger. Additionally, only the 5970P sinks the swiss figure ‘15’ into the outer circumference of the minutes track, added over the ‘120’ figure. In other words, to make matters worse, despite the numbers being larger, an the omission of 120, the margin feels reduced.
I guess for better or for worse, within this 5970 family the 5970P looks the most flamboyant. Also only with 5970P is the stop hand is white, a big factor that makes it gorgeous.
Seen this way, WG as the first incarnation of 5970 was highly original, you might say has the most simplest design. And is always thought of as the earliest model, being referred to as MK1. But again, it’s why I think the value of the platinum case remains consistent.
Incidentally, even though the 5971 has the same black dial with baguette-cut diamond even in the same platinum, the date numbers are the same normal size as the 5970WG. Since 5971 came after 5970P, there was somewhat of a design changed between models.
