TIFFANY 6238/6264
By the way, here is a mysterious one to be exhibited at Sotheby's. At first glance, this is a 14264 gold 6264 champagne dial. I thought it was that TIFFANY name (some of them actually exist in 6264), but the mysterious one is 6238 for some reason instead of 6264. Moreover, it is an exhibition from the original owner.
Generally speaking, 6238 is a model called "Predaytona" instead of Daytona in the first place, and if it is originally 6238 14K case, this dial is not included. The bezel is a smooth bezel in the first place.
However, this individual is in this state with the Daytona 6241/64 bezel and dial inside.
Of course, 6238 and 6241/64 have the same case diameter, and the dials can be replaced. You can actually remove the 6238 smooth bezel and attach the 6241/64 Daytona bezel. So, if this individual were sold in the market, I would normally think "it's a replacement." In other words, it is a solid case of 6238 with a dial for 6241/64 (and TIFFANY) for some reason.
Sotheby's knows a hundred such things, and is probably receiving it. It may be based on the fact that the seller is the original owner (the first owner bought at that time). It may be a bit subtle about how the market values it. I think the situation would have been different if I came with a warranty card and photos at that time (materials that proved that this dial was sold in the 6238 from the beginning).
However, it is an annoyance with the old ROLEX that it cannot be said that this watch has never been sold in this condition from the beginning.
Ideally, this dial should fit in a 14K 6264. There are some serial TIFFANYs whose existence is confirmed, so that was the best.
