Ref. 6240
I’ve recently spoken with one of top overseas dealers on the topic of Rolex 6240. This model is well known to have been sold as a prototype of oyster cases 6263 and 6265 at the same time non oyster 6239 and 6241 were in production. Despite the period of this production, It came with screw down pusher called “Millerighe” or “MK0” in the market currently.
Since 6240 solo came out and became a crazy price at the Phillips auction half of years ago, the trend has been changing a little bit. Some experienced collectors started changing their shift by realizing the amount of 6240 is much less and even more collectible than Paul Newman which presently raises the market price of all 6240.
the big deference of 6240 and 6263, 6265 is not only the pushers, we can even put a non oyster dial by following serial against its look which is why it’s a good choice for every watch lover.
If you are aiming for 6240, you should care about all parts of a watch (a dial, bezel, hands, case) otherwise it may turn out that it looks like a normal oyster 6263 Daytona. In addition since the range of serial is so small, it’s pretty difficult to discover one with right a case. I also think a choice of leather straps is important to make it look cool too.
The small Daytona. MK1 Bezel, MK0 pusher. Early MK0 are characterised by several things like the colour of ageing brass. The chronograph hand is an regular triangle, and hand in sub-dial at 9 is straight.
The big ‘jumbo’ Daytona. Similarly it uses a MK1 bezel and MK0 pusher with a straight left sub-dial.
The SOLO. Whether it was sold by Rolex or not, this type of the watch has recently been sold as 6240 at Phillips auction, it should be ok if it comes with right serial case said in the market. That’s why “vintage Rolex is really interesting.”
