Clyfford Still Museum

This is the one museum I really want to go to.

Clyfford Sill was a really unusual artist, as most of his work never sold. Which is why his work hardly ever goes to auction.

Based on Still’s will, “work will be provided free of charge as long as various conditions are met such as having a semi-permanent exhibition devoted solely to one’s own work”, the museum in Denver City, Colorado, was finally completed in 2011 30 years after his death. Also according to his wishes, architecture was carried out by Allied Works Architecture.

In November 2011, four works came up for auction at Sotheby’s, and can still remember the largest work fetching $60 Million (approx. ¥49 Billion at that time), but the four works at that time were shown so as to fund the cost of operating the museum.

Following his death, only a few of his works can be procured, to fund the cost of operating the museum of his works. There is perhaps nothing as lucky as this for an artist.

And for the first time in a while, one of his big pieces will be up for auction next month at Christies.
