"FAILURE" Satoshi Takamatsu

R0001990

Satoshi Takamatsu's first solo exhibition aiming for space"FAILURE"Is being held in Omotesando. I was fortunate to be introduced to Mr. Takamatsu when I asked him to introduce me to my life, which I was completely interested in the universe only because I was absorbed in the "Star Trek" series.

No way, Mr. Takamatsu worked on the space-themed CM series for the Nissin Cup Noodles "NO BORDER" and "FREEDOM". The appeal of the commercial was strong, and I remembered it as a child. Mr. Takamatsu had decided to become an astronaut since he was a child, but he gave up because of his poor eyesight and joined Dentsu. CM was a work I worked on when I was active as an art director, and it was a masterpiece in which my dreams were connected through my own work, wanting to get as close as possible to the universe, which is my dream place.
R0002015 R0002013In 2014, it was decided that Mr. Takamatsu would be the first Japanese civilian to be an astronaut with ISS (International Space Station) boarding qualifications, and it was widely reported. This is also embarrassing, but I didn't know it at all because of my low interest in space. Taking this opportunity, he retired from the advertising industry and started training as a backup crew for British singer Sarah Brightman, who was planning a space trip. At that time, Mr. Takamatsu was 52 years old. I think 800 hours of training for eight months was not a trivial effort. "But one morning, Sarah was gone," said Sarah, who had withdrawn from training. For Mr. Takamatsu, a backup crew, her absence means the withdrawal of space flight itself. It seems that various things happened in his mind and he was absent-minded for a while, but he decided to complete the training and to record the days with the camera he had since he was a child.

Completed training until the graduation ceremony and attended the graduation ceremony. I also gave a speech in Russian. "I received a diploma, but I was not certified as an astronaut," recalls Mr. Takamatsu. "This exhibition is a record of failure to become an astronaut," he said in a slightly upper row. However, the trajectory was reflected in a series of precious times. Mr. Takamatsu's photographs are filled with the calm time between the rigorous trainings spent in the "city of stars" and the love for the days of striving for astronauts. I also felt that the universe was a little closer to me.
