Minakata Kumagusu: An intellectual 100 years ahead of his time

2017 kumagusu-1
Ueno is all about pandas at the moment, but it also has things on like this.
You can also see the actual field notes of Minakata Kumagusu!
I’m less likely to be impressed by something simple that looks genuinely powerful, and felt something in the collection was odd even before going to museums abroad and being confronted by the masterpieces there. It’s the same as not being interested in any sort of tourist attraction. Leaves may look beautiful in the fall, but I’ve never seriously thought I want to go and see them.
Even though that might still be the case in terms of sight-seeing, this “genuine power” has become really interesting of late. A lot of time was locked up in that, and thoughts concerned with this and that and the links it makes are interesting. I guess I grew up (lol).
Kumagusu’s field notes are certainly full of originality.
What is perhaps the only video of the old man in existence was also shown, looking if not a little like Ai Weiwei (lol)
Which reminds me, Hiroshi was on the radio the other day talking about Caochangdi. Although I checked his instagram account to see what was going on there, I wonder if it was really like that. The context there and information doesn’t appear on social media. So I understood a lot more after when we actually met and talked. Just listening to the interesting views of others on Ai Weiwei is meaningless. Although it might just be causal conversation, these things don’t appear at any length on any sort of social media or network. It would be good if we could write this kind of thing up, even on RoC.
