Poke

POKE-988 x 658

Every once in a while, a food sensation sweeps across major cities in America. Recent ones in the past have been soft serve, gourmet donuts, cupcakes, “cronuts”, frozen yogurt, and high end artisanal ice cream. But recently, a new food trend has emerged and it’s been picking up steam very very quickly. It’s Poke.

Poke is pronounced “Poh-Kay” and came from Hawaii as a raw fish salad appetizer. “Poke” is Hawaiian for “section” or “to slice”. The difference between this trend and others I’ve seen is that Poke is actually really healthy. If you replace the rice with a salad base, it is almost a completely carb free meal of low fat protein that is quite satisfying. All the other food trends have basically risen and fallen (with only a small handful of winners managing to stay around.) I think eventually, people will have their fill of unhealthy sweets and treats before too long. But when something comes in that is healthy, it will be interesting if it can have a more lasting affect.

(This is the line up every single day for the Poke spot near my office. It begins early in the morning and stays the same all the way to closing.)
