rare groove

Is the term ‘rare grove’, a genre? I remember a time when I experienced it emerged first time around,

with it originating in London.

It was ’84 or ’85 … We all went in search of breakbeats and HipHop material. With breakbeats, which I’ll write more about later, it’s the beats that are more important than the songs themselves, yet thought maybe these are good songs too. I had just moved to London and asked Toshi and Kudo of ‘Melon’ to take me to the Soul2Soul club night where DJ’s began playing rare soul/funk, so maybe this is when it all began. Hearing one rare soul/funk track after the other was a real eye-opener.

Around that time, this appeared as a bootleg 12-inch white label.

Cross The Track / I Believe In Miracles

It would be this bootleg release that would subsequently lead to the ’rare groove’ boom.

I’m particularly fond of this track that Soul2Soul played.
