The well-known ‘Thanda Pani’ is close to Kansai University, Senetsu’s alma-mater. It was still selling that unusually rare and distinctive heavily-spiced curry in Osaka from it’s early days.
I had heard that staff who been trained there now had a shop in Ebisu so when to go and have a look.
It’s quite difficult to find. It seems to operate for lunch renting space from a bar, a style often the case in Osaka.
The menu is a single chicken curry. Sizes are ‘regular’, ‘large’ (1.25x), and ‘double’ (1.5x). Probably when shopkeeper and staff hear women ask for ‘regular 200g rice’ it probably feels a little stylish. So I order ‘large’.
First, it comes with 2 types of onion. Sliced and pickled.
The curry is dry and in terms of spiciness I wonder if this was made slightly stronger than the original? The spiciness builds up while thinking how will I keep eating. Chicken melts in the mouth and the onion garnish is the perfect match. Originally onion comes out in large quantity and I seem to add too much as well. But can’t quite manage it all. (laugh)
The memory makes me want to eat all over again.
