Fake

What all the fuss was about? One man became a mysterious figure on tv while the other completely disappeared.

This tale is the documentary film ‘Fake’.

It really became Mori’s film, successfully going along at his own pace, and in that sense, a very well-made documentary.

‘Fake’

Director Tatsuya Mori’s full commentary.

Apart from being one of the film directors for ‘311’, a collaboration of 4 directors, ‘Fake’ is in fact my first film in 15 years, since ‘A2’.

Of course, during this time, thats not to say there was no theme or subject I was planning to take on, but if there was a theme it would have been TEPCO (Tokyo Electric Power) to The Shinoyama Incident, and if one subject, Akina Nakamori, or the current Emperor. I tried several times, but ultimately was unable to make one last. Then a few years ago, I though to myself that I may never shoot another film again.

But this year was finally able to make one. In film, the most important thing is universal appeal. Obviously, the theme of ‘ghost writer’ alone will not work. So it should ask questions—who shaped him, who’s lying, did they actually lied, what’s is truth, what is deception, can the two be clearly separated, what should the media be reporting, what should you be told, or to begin with is Tatsuya Mori believable?

… viewpoints and interpretations are countless. And not just one. Of course this film is yours, but I finally saw what my interpretation and viewpoint looked like. Being this free is perfectly okay, but I want you to think of the film as having only a single point of view.

To be rich and free, with all the different interpretation and perspectives there are, this world is wonderful.
